Exclusive: Pakistani actor stars in Chal Mera Put 2, two years after film fraternity banned him from casting

Following the deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama in February 2019 that claimed the lives of 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, the All Indian Cine Workers Association announced a complete ban on Pakistani artistes and actors. working in India. The film industry has also shown solidarity by not working with Pakistani actors and singers in Indian films for the last two years.

But now, a Punjabi film Chal Mera Put 2, which is slated to release this week, will see five Pakistani actors (Jaffrey Khan, Iftikhar Thakur, Nasir Chinoti, Ruby Anam and Akram Udas) as part of the cast. Since Pakistani actors are not allowed to shoot in India, the makers of the film have gone to the UK and shot the film.

Justifying the casting, producer Munish Sahni said, “There is no particular reason to cast Pakistani actors. We shot the film in the United Kingdom and he was needed for this project. If I want to give an international exposure to the film, I have to consider the areas where Indian actors have limited access.”

Asked if Pakistani actors have better reach than Indian actors, he said, “I am not talking only about Indian actors. I am specifically talking about Punjabi actors.”

However, when it was pointed out that many Indian actors have played Pakistani characters in the past, Sahni said, “It was not necessary to cast Pakistani actors. There were some characters in the film that needed to be justified. You will know about the casting when you watch the film.”

He further said, ‘Punjabi films do not have the reach that Hindi films have. Not all Punjabi movies work when they are released abroad. We wanted to justify the film creatively and that is why we roped in Pakistani actors.”

Despite being a Pakistani artist, the film will not release in Pakistan.
