Hosts Germany moved into the quarterfinal of the Euro 2024 with a 2-0 win over Denmark in their Round of 16 encounter at the Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund on Sunday.

Kai Havertz converted from the spot to put Germany in front before Jamal Musiala slotted one into the far side of the net to double the home team’s lead against the Danish unit to earn progress.

Play was halted for a bit in the 25th minute of the game before the action could resume due to hailstones and high winds as Germany weathered the storm and the Danes, who had reached the semifinal of the previous edition of the continental tournament.

Nagelsmann made three changes to the German side following their last outing, a 1-1 draw with Switzerland.

Nico Schlotterbeck replaced the suspended Jonathan Tah in central defence, David Raum came in at left-back, and Leroy Sane was preferred to Florian Wirtz on the right wing.

Schlotterbeck, of Borussia Dortmund, thought he had given Germany the lead inside four minutes when he headed in a corner in front of the enormous South Stand.

He ran off in celebration, but the goal was disallowed due to a foul by Joshua Kimmich.

The Danes weathered their own storm early in the match and, against the run of play, thought they took the lead when Andersen hooked home a shot from close range. The Video Assistant Referee spotted an offside in the buildup, a free kick was awarded and the ball was played downfield, leading to a cross by David Raum hitting Andersen’s outstretched right arm. The VAR got involved again and a penalty was awarded.

The Germans will play Spain or Georgia next and became the second team to advance from the round of 16 after Switzerland beat defending champion Italy 2-0 earlier Saturday.
