BRUSSELS: EU countries and EU lawmakers are set to agree on a common charging port for mobile phones, tablets and headphones on June 7 when they meet to discuss a proposal that has been slammed by Apple. The criticism has been met, people familiar with the matter said.

The proposal for a single mobile charging port was discussed by the European Commission more than a decade ago after iPhone and Android users complained of using different chargers for their phones.

The former is charged with a Lightning cable while Android-based devices are powered using a USB-C connector.

Next Tuesday the trilogy will be the second and potentially final between EU countries and EU lawmakers on the subject, indicating a strong push to strike a deal, people said.

Among the outstanding issues is broadening the scope of the laptop proposal, a key demand from EU lawmakers that is likely to affect Samsung and Huawei and other device makers, the people said.

EU lawmakers also want wireless charging systems to be included by 2025, while EU countries and commissions want a longer lead-in period for technical reasons.

Apple was not immediately available for comment. It has previously said that improper use of dated international standards stifles innovation and that forcing users to switch to new chargers could lead to a mountain of electronic waste.
