Dhoom star Esha Deol looks back at her mother Hema Malini’s reaction to her sporting a bikini in Dhoom Machale song.
When Esha Deol, Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra’s Dhoom hit the screens in 2004, it wasn’t just the high-octane action and sleek bikes that had everyone talking — it was Esha, who set the screen ablaze when she rocked a bikini in the song Dhoom Machale. Dhoom, with its peppy music and visuals, became an instant sensation, and Esha’s bold look was a big part of the buzz around the film.
As the film celebrates 20 years, Esha reflected on that ‘bikini moment’ in a recent interview with Filmygyan. When asked about her mother, legendary actress Hema Malini’s reaction to her wearing a bikini, Esha revealed that there was no shock or surprise. “My mom is a very broad-minded woman,” she said, adding, “I go with my friends on holidays. We go on holidays. I’ve worn bikinis. What is wrong in that?” Previously, in an interview with Bollywood Bubble, Esha Deol had said how she needed a moment to seek her mother’s permission to sport a bikini in the Dhoom title track. But, it wasn’t a problem at all — her mother Hema Malini’s response was as cool as it gets.
Asked if she rode a bike during the making of the film, Esha said, “No, no, the bikes were more precious than the actors on set. The bikes were the heroes of the film. So, they didn’t allow us to try any antiques, but Abhishek, John, and Uday would ride around sometimes after pack-up when we were shooting in Goa. Once in a while, I would get to sit on one.”
Directed by Sanjay Gadhvi and produced by Yash Raj Films, Dhoom was such a smash hit that it spawned not one, but two sequels — Dhoom 2 and Dhoom 3 — each a bigger hit than the original. Dhoom 2 (2006) took things to a whole new level with Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in a dazzling heist thriller that zoomed through stunning global locations.
