‘Ensure that no party stops from campaigning in a peaceful manner’: Supreme Court to Tripura Police

The Supreme Court on Thursday, November 11 asked the Tripura Police to ensure that no political party is prevented from exercising its right to peacefully campaign for the upcoming municipal elections.

The top court passed the interim order after hearing the arguments of senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan, representing the Trinamool Congress and its Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev.

The petition referred to the alleged violence against party members and sought directions to protect them for the municipal elections to be held on November 25.

A bench of Justices DY Chandrachud, Surya Kant and Vikram Nath said: “We expect that necessary arrangements will be made by the state government and the DGP along with the law enforcement machinery of the state.”
