According to the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2020-2021, enrollment in higher education institutions increased to 4.14 crore during 2020-21, crossing the 4 crore mark for the first time.

It registered an increase of 7.5 per cent over 2019-20 and 21 per cent over 2014-15.

Female enrollment has increased from 1.88 crore to 2.01 crore in 2019-20. The survey report states that their number has increased by about 44 lakh (28 per cent) since 2014-15.

The Ministry of Education has been conducting the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) since 2011, which covers all higher educational institutions located on Indian territory and providing higher education in the country.

The survey collects detailed information on various parameters such as student enrolment, teachers’ data, infrastructural information, financial information etc.

For the first time in AISHE 2020-21, Higher Education Institutions or HEIs have filled the data online through Web Data Capture Format (DCF) developed by Department of Higher Education with the help of National Informatics Center (NIC). ,

The total enrollment in higher education has increased from 3.85 crore in 2019-20 to about 4.14 crore in 2020-21. From 2014-15, there has been an increase of about 72 lakh in enrollment (21 pc). Female enrollment has increased from 1.88 crore to 2.01 crore in 2019-20. There is an increase of about 44 lakhs (28 pc) from 2014-15,” the education ministry said in a statement.

The percentage of female enrollment to total enrollment has increased from 45 pc in 2014-15 to around 49 pc in 2020-21. The GER has increased from 25.6 to 27.3 in 2019-20, as per the 2011 population estimates for the 18-23 years age group.

As per the survey, there was a significant increase of 28 per cent in enrollment of SC students and 38 per cent in enrollment of female SC students in 2020-21 as compared to 2014-15.

“There has been an increase of 47 per cent in enrollment of ST students and 63.4 per cent in enrollment of female ST students in 2020-21 as compared to 2014-15. There has been an increase of about 61 percent in enrollment in Institutes of National Importance (INIs) during the period from 2014-15 to 2020-21.

“There has been an increase in enrollment in 2020-21 in comparison to 2014-15 in specific universities related to Defence, Sanskrit, Biotechnology, Forensic, Design. Play Etcetera. The total number of pass-outs has increased to 95.4 lakh in 2020-21 as against 94 lakh in 2019-20.
