A report on ‘Wheat Crop and Production Estimates for Crop Year 2022-23’ was also released on Friday.

This year’s wheat production is better than expected and forecast, and the government assures support to farmers in view of unexpected rains

FCI Chairman and Managing Director Ashok Kumar Meena said on Friday that the Food Corporation of India has so far procured 7 lakh tonnes of wheat and is ready to procure 342 lakh tonnes of wheat this year. He said this is in view of better than expected wheat production, estimates and government’s assurance of support to farmers in view of recent unseasonal rains.

“It is important for all of us, the government and the private sector, to work together to ensure that wheat and flour prices remain stable despite global adversities. We also have the backing of higher production estimates,” Meena said.

Subodh Kumar Singh, Additional Secretary, Department of Food and Public Distribution, also said that despite the impact of unseasonal rains and hailstorm in March-April 2023, estimates by both the ministry and private agencies indicate higher wheat production this year.

He was addressing the first extraordinary general meeting and meeting of the Board of Directors of the Roller Floor Millers Federation of India. During the event, a survey report on ‘Wheat Crops and Production Estimates for the Crop Year 2022-23’ was also released.

Wheat producing states are expected to produce 102.89 lakh tonnes of wheat by the end of March 2023, down from 104.24 lakh tonnes, due to unseasonal rains and hailstorm, according to a report prepared by AgriWatch on behalf of the federation.

The estimates are based on a two-phase survey conducted in 80 districts across nine states – Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.

Pramod Kumar S, president of Roller Flour Millers Federation of India, urged the government to lift the ban on export of wheat products due to high estimates and adequate buffer stock.

He said, “Although unexpected rains and hailstorm have disrupted the record production, higher acreage and yield is expected to create a comfortable situation for the country. Therefore, we request the government to consider lifting the ban on wheat exports.” We do, so that we can support the large Indian diaspora who always prefer Indian wheat flour.”

Federation’s Senior Vice President Navneet Chitlangia said that to avoid the previous situations where wheat prices used to fluctuate due to lack of data, we have come up with this survey. “It will help both the industry and the government to plan future course of action as well as measures to control prices.”

Assuring the Federation’s support in the Government’s drive on millet products, Rohit Khaitan, Honorary Secretary, Roller Flour Millers Federation of India said, “The Federation is working towards the production of coarse grain flour and is supporting the efforts of the Government.” Committed to do. To promote the consumption of coarse cereals in the country and elsewhere.”

Dharmendra Jain, Vice President, Roller Flour Millers Federation of India said, “The government is open minded to listen to our issues and also provide solutions. We follow Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call of ‘National interest before anything’. We are committed to supporting and we have demonstrated this by working with the government to control flour prices.

Established in 1940, the 2,500-plus member-strong All India Association is expecting an excellent wheat crop and bumper procurement this year.
