  • Brian Lara set the record in December 2003
  • Stuart Broad conceded 35 runs in an over on the second day of the Birmingham Test
  • Bumrah also took three wickets on the second day.

West Indies legend Brian Lara has congratulated Jasprit Bumrah after the Indian batsman was involved in the most expensive over in the history of Test cricket. In December 2003, left-arm Lara scored 28 runs over left-arm spinner Robin Peterson in a Test match against South Africa at the prestigious Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.

This record remained with Lara for about 19 years. On Saturday, July 2, Stuart Broad conceded 35 runs with Bumrah on strike in the fifth Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham. Start of the over Broad concedes 10 runs off wide and no-ball. Bumrah scored 34 runs in the first five balls of the over, after which Bumrah finished with a single.

After his record was broken, Lara posted a congratulatory tweet for Bumrah, who is currently leading the Indian Test team in Rohit Sharma’s absence.

Lara wrote on Twitter, “Join me in congratulating young @JaspritBumrah 93 for breaking the record for most runs in an over in Tests. Brilliant!.”

Bumrah made 31 off 16 balls and remained unbeaten, helping India post 416 after being reduced to 98 for five in less than 30 overs. After centuries from Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja for the visiting team, Bumrah’s innings picked up momentum in India’s innings.

It was also an impressive day for Bumrah as he took three crucial wickets of Alex Lees, Jack Crawley and Olly Pope. At the end of the second day’s play, England are 332 runs behind with only five wickets left in their first innings.

Jonny Bairstow and skipper Ben Stokes are the overnight batsmen for the Three Lions and they have a huge task ahead of them.
