England Test Captain Joe Root Eyes Maiden IPL Tenure Next Year: Report

England Test captain Joe Root is hoping to make his Indian Premier League debut next year and will make his name in the 2022 mega auction, a report said on Wednesday.

Considered one of the game’s modern greats, Root is yet to play in the IPL after going unsold in the 2018 auction, but that could all change in next year’s tournament, which will be expanded with the addition of two new teams. To be done.

According to a report in the Daily Telegraph, Root is looking to “enter the auction next year in an effort to play in the competition for the first time and also boost his T20 World Cup hopes.”

The BCCI is planning to add two teams for the 2022 edition, which means there will be another 16 slots for overseas players in the mega auction, which will see almost all players under the hammer.

Root had expressed his desire to play in the IPL last year, though he chose not to go to the auction.

“At some point in my career, I am looking forward to be a part of the IPL season. Hopefully, something more than this. It is something that I would love to experience, and would love to be a part of,” he had said.

“With the amount of international cricket and especially Test cricket this year, it didn’t feel like it was the right time (to enter the auction).

“I didn’t feel like I could put all my energy into it, which it deserves. And, I don’t think it will set me up and set up the best of English cricket with time to come.”

The 30-year-old, who last played a T20I for England in May 2019, is not a part of England’s T20 World Cup squad. He is preparing to lead the team in the Ashes series to be held in Australia.

Root averages 35.7 in T20s but has been missing in action in the shortest format mainly due to workload management.
