The entire first-choice team was forced into isolation following the COVID-19 outbreak, which led to England naming a new squad under Ben Stokes with nine uncapped players. Stokes will lead them in ODIs for the first time.

Chris Silverwood, who was scheduled to take some time off during the white-ball series, will be the head coach.

Ashley Giles, managing director of England Men’s Cricket, said: “It’s a great opportunity to play on the biggest stage, and for most of the players picked it’s not necessarily what they’re expecting 24 hours in advance.”

“It is an exciting group of players with some young talent and some players who have impressed at the domestic level for a long time.

“We are in unprecedented territory in terms of transforming an entire squad and management team, and I am extremely proud that everyone has come together to make this happen – both within the ECB and from county sport.

“Ben hasn’t captained our ODI team before, so it’s a huge honor for him. We all wish him well and I am sure this is a role he will succeed in.

“I would also like to put on record the ECB’s thanks to the PCB for their support and understanding during this time.”
