Endodontist explains the possible reason for Swati Satish’s root canal treatment that went wrong

Recently, Kannada TV actress and anchor Swati Sathish made headlines after her root canal surgery went wrong. According to several media reports, a part of the actress’s face was completely swollen due to Swati’s root canal procedure. She was reportedly told by her dentist that the swelling would subside in a few hours, however, the left side of her face was swollen for 20 days.

Local news media reports mentioned that Swati was allegedly given salicylic acid instead of a local anesthetic agent. Meanwhile, it is not yet disclosed whether she will take any legal action against the dental clinic.

In a report in The Indian Express, Dr Nikita Mehra, a consultant endodontist at Mumbai’s Masina Hospital, explained the dental procedure and also the possible reason why Swati’s face remained swollen for 20 days after the surgery.

The health expert explained when a root canal procedure is really needed for a person. She mentioned that a root canal is a dental procedure that involves removing the soft center and pulp of the infected tooth which is made up of nerves, connecting tissue and blood vessels.

In this procedure, the entire pulp is removed from the crown and the infected tooth roots are cleaned and disinfected to avoid re-occurrence. The root is then filled with canal filling material.

“The procedure is usually performed by a general dentist or a specialist endodontist under local anesthesia, and it is very safe,” Mehra said.

He further mentioned the minor complications of the procedure. Dr Mehra said rare anesthetic complications can include a tingling or prickling, pin-and-needle sensation, which is usually temporary and gets better on its own.

Dental health complications may include minor swelling, pain or discomfort, which usually subside upon successful completion of the procedure.

Sharing about the serious complications, he stressed, “The patient is accidentally injected with solutions other than a local anesthetic agent such as sodium hypochlorite, which is used for cleaning the canal, or salicylic acid.” As seen, reportedly, in the present scenario.”

To avoid such incidents, Dr. Mehra suggests opting for an experienced general dentist or a registered specialist endodontist who has their expertise in performing successful root canal procedures.
