Ellyse Perry wants BCCI to organize women’s IPL

Australia all-rounder Ellyse Perry believes the Women’s Indian Premier League (WPL)IPL) is the next frontier in women’s cricket competitions around the world. They have demanded from the Board of Control Cricket in India (BCCI) to pull the trigger for organizing a women’s IPL after the success of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) and The Hundred.

The second phase of IPL 2021 is starting in UAE from Sunday. Since its inception in 2008, the IPL has become the most extraordinary T20 league in the world. But the women’s edition of the league has been reduced from 2018 to three editions of an exhibition tournament called the “Women’s T20 Challenge”. This year’s edition has been postponed due to COVID-19, however BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has yet to take any decision on the rescheduled dates. Once there was mention of seven to eight teams in the women’s league.

“I know a lot has happened to it in terms of the performance of IPL matches for women. So, at some point it’s about pulling the trigger and putting together a perfect competition and hopefully it’s not too far off. I’m sure Indian girls would absolutely love to be like that,” Elise was quoted as saying by The Sydney Morning Herald on Sunday.

“It has been wonderful for many of them to play in the WBBL over the years. At this stage it looks like they will be joining again this year, so it would be wonderful to have a contest over there mutually. IPL is preferred over men’s cricket and I think it has the potential to be as big as women’s game in many ways.”

Australian players took part in the Women’s T20 Challenge in 2018, before missing out on the 2019 and 2020 editions. Indian players have been present in the WBBL and have participated in The Hundred this year when several Australian players dropped out. Ellyse, 30, noted that starting a cricket league for women offers great opportunities for business, entertainment and sport to grow in the world.

“I really think it is an incentive for other boards to seriously consider starting professional women’s T20 competitions, especially the BCCI and a full-fledged IPL for women. Because there is a great opportunity out there and it It is becoming a huge commercial opportunity for the cricket board to bring a women’s side to the competition,” she said.

“Not only from a spectacle or entertainment point of view, but also because growing the game in our country and getting more young girls to play and get involved in cricket is very important for the game’s viability in the future. So, for me that’s the role those competitions play and it’s really amazing to see how much time and support and investment Cricket Australia has invested in the WBBL and ECB with The Hundred and in the Super League before that. As much as we can start these competitions around the world, I think it would be fair to say that the next frontier is an IPL,” Ellis concluded.
