With the increase in heat in Himachal, electricity generation has also started coming back on track. For the first time after a gap of about seven months, the State Electricity Board’s own small power project has started generating electricity up to 75 percent. Although it was hardly 55 percent till last Wednesday, but till 12 noon on Thursday, up to 75 percent production has started.

When other states of the country are facing power crisis. At such a time, the increase in power generation in Himachal is considered to be a good sign because most of the states of the country are troubled by power cuts due to shortage of coal. Due to power shortage, continuous cuts are being made in many industrial areas.

Forced power cuts have started in Himachal during the last one week as the entire power generation has not started in the state yet. Himachal is also unable to procure enough power from other states as 70 per cent of the electricity generation in the country is dependent on coal. The country is facing acute shortage of coal these days.

Electricity production will increase with increase in heat

As the heat will increase in Himachal. In the same way, electricity generation will also increase, because glaciers melt faster due to heat. This increases the water level of large rivers. Most of the power projects in the state are also on big rivers. The state generates surplus power every year during summer and Himachal earns money by selling electricity to neighboring states in summer.

Generally, there is good power generation from May to September. After this the glaciers start freezing again. Due to this the power generation falls and in winter Himachal becomes dependent on electricity from neighboring states.

Electricity demand reaching 325 lakh units

During the last years, there is a demand of 280 to 290 lakh units of electricity in the state in the month of April, but this time the demand of electricity is reaching 325 lakh units. That is, the production is decreasing and the demand for electricity has become very high. This is the reason why power cuts have to be imposed in the power state of Himachal as well.

Power board’s own project capability

State Electricity Board Board’s own small power project has a total generation capacity of 95 to 100 lakh units. Of these, 50 to 60 lakh units were being produced daily till two days ago. Today it is expected to be up to 75 percent.
