After the Lok Sabha passed the Election Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2021 amid uproar on Monday, government sources said linking Aadhaar with voter ID would solve major problems related to database management of voters.

The bill was passed by voice vote, while several opposition members stood in the Well of the House and raised slogans. The bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Monday morning. When the bill was introduced, the members of the opposition opposed the bill.

Government sources said, “It is difficult to maintain the electoral database due to frequent shifting of houses by voters and getting enrolled at a new location without deleting the previous nominations,” in such cases the names appear in more than one electoral roll. or more than once in the same electoral roll.

“Once the Aadhaar linkage is done, the voter list data system will immediately alert the existence of previous registration whenever a person applies for new registration,” sources said.

“This will help in cleaning up the electoral rolls to a great extent and facilitate voter registration at the place where they are ‘ordinarily resident’,” he said.

Registration in the electoral roll is done on the basis of an application by a person who is eligible to be registered as a voter. There is a provision in this bill under which a new applicant can voluntarily provide Aadhaar number with the application for the purpose of identification. Sources said that no application will be rejected on the ground that Aadhaar number is not provided.
