Election season in Bengal after Durga Puja; TMC plans aggressive bypoll campaign in 4 assembly seats

The political temperature is set to rise once again in West Bengal as bypolls to four assembly constituencies will be held on October 30. The Trinamool Congress had won all three seats, including Bhabnipur, in the by-polls held on September 30. Mamata Banerjee Won by a huge margin and secured his third term as Chief Minister.

Bypolls will be held on October 30 in Gosaba (South 24 Parganas), Kharda (North 24 Parganas), Dinhata (Cooch Behar) and Shantipur (Nadia) assembly constituencies. The counting of votes will take place on November 2, two days before Diwali.

Two Trinamool Congress MLCs died in Gosaba and Khardah, necessitating elections, while MLAs Nishith Pramanik and Jagannath Sarkar resigned from Dinhata and Shantipur.

Despite winning all three bypolls in September, the TMC is planning to launch an aggressive campaign, especially in Dinhata and Shantipur, which the BJP won by a margin of only 57 and 15,000 votes in this year’s assembly elections.

TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee will campaign in all the four constituencies. He will visit Gosaba and Kharda on 23 October, Dinhata and Cooch Behar on 25 October and Shantipur and Nadia the next day. Minister-in-Charge (Transport and Housing) Firhad Hakim will reach Cooch Behar in North Bengal by October 23 and start campaigning for votes. Three TMC candidates started campaigning during Durga Puja.

MP Sukhendu Shekhar Roy said, ‘We will definitely do 4-0 this time. Abhishek Banerjee has planned to visit all these places and this time we will cross 220 once the results are out.

At present, the ruling TMC has 216 seats while the BJP has 75 seats out of the total 292 assembly constituencies.

Sovandev Chatterjee, who resigned from Bhawanipur seat for Mamata Banerjee, will contest from Khardah constituency.

Meanwhile, BJP leader and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Minister of State for Assam Pratima Bhowmik are expected to reach West Bengal this week and launch the campaign. Smriti Irani will also reach the state and support BJP candidates like Bhawanipur by-election.
