Election Results 2024 Live: Voting in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim was held on April 19

Assembly Election Results 2024 Live Updates: The BJP on Sunday returned to power in Arunachal Pradesh, while the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) secured a second term in Sikkim. 

Voting was held for 60 assembly seats in Arunachal Pradesh and 32 assembly seats in Sikkim on April 19.

According to the Election Commission, the BJP returned to power in Arunachal Pradesh for the third time in a row after winning 46 seats. Results were declared on Sunday for 50 of the 60 assembly seats as the ruling party had already won ten seats unopposed. Chief Minister Pema Khandu was one of the ten party candidates who won unopposed earlier.

The National People’s Party (NPP) won five seats, while the People’s Party of Arunachal got two seats and the NCP secured three. The Congress could manage only one seat, and Independent candidates emerged victorious in three constituencies.

In Sikkim, the SKM led by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang won 31 seats, while the SDF won one seat.

Assembly Election Results: “Historic Day For Arunachal Pradesh”, Says Pema Khandu
After the BJP swept the assembly elections, Chief Minister Pema Khandu called it a “historic day for Arunachal Pradesh”.

“The party set a new record in these Assembly elections… In 2019, we won 41 seats and in 2024 we have won 46 seats,” he told the news agency ANI.

Sikkim Assembly Election Results: PM Modi Congratulates Prem Singh Tamang, SKM

PM Narendra Modi has congratulated SKM and its chief Prem Singh Tamang for winning the Sikkim assembly elections.

“I look forward to working with the State Government to further the progress of Sikkim in the coming times,” he posted on X.

He also thanked those who voted for the BJP in the Sikkim assembly elections. 

“I also appreciate the efforts put in by our Karyakartas. Our Party will always be at the forefront of working towards Sikkim’s development and fulfilling people’s aspirations,” PM Modi said.

Sikkim Assembly Election Results: 5-Time Chief Minister Pawan Chamling Loses

Five-time former Sikkim chief minister and SDF supremo Pawan Kumar Chamling has lost from both Poklok Kamrang and Namcheybung Assembly seats.

Mr Chamling, an eight-time MLA, lost to Sikkim Krantikari Morcha’s Bhoj Raj Rai by 3,063 votes in the Poklok Kamrang seat in his native Namchi district.

Mr Rai polled 8,037 votes while Mr Chamling received 4,974. 

He also lost to SKM’s Raju Basnet by 2,256 votes from the Namcheybung assembly constituency. While Mr Basnet bagged 7,195 votes, Mr Chamling got 4,939.

Mr Chamling was the chief minister of Sikkim for 25 years from 1994 to 2019.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has thanked Arunachal Pradesh after the BJP secured a massive victory in the assembly polls in the northeastern state.

Taking to X, he said, “Thank you Arunachal Pradesh! The people of this wonderful state have given an unequivocal mandate to politics of development. My gratitude to them for reposing their faith in @BJP4Arunachal yet again. Our Party will keep working with even greater vigour for the state’s growth.” 

He also said, “I would like to appreciate the hardwork of the exceptional @BJP4Arunachal Karyakartas through the election campaign. It is commendable how they went across the state and connected with the people.”

The BJP had won 41 assembly seats in 2019.

Sikkim Assembly Election Result: State BJP President Dilli Ram Thapa Loses

Sikkim BJP president Dilli Ram Thapa has lost to SKM nominee Kala Rai in the Upper Burtuk assembly constituency.

Mr Thapa, who is a sitting MLA and a former minister, lost to Mr Rai by 2,968 votes.

While Mr Rai polled 6,723 votes, Mr Thapa received 3,755.

Arunachal Pradesh: 24 Counting Centres Set Up In 25 Districts

In Arunachal Pradesh, election officials said that 24 counting centres (48 counting halls) have been set up in 25 districts and three-tier security arrangements have been put in place in and around these centres with the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) taking the lead.

Over 2,000 officials have been deployed for the vote counting and the Election Commission has appointed 27 counting observers to supervise the process.

In Sikkim, which recorded 79.77 per cent turnout of its 4,64 lakh voters in the Assembly elections and 80.03 per cent in the Parliamentary polls held simultaneously, the main fight is between the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM), led by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, and the Sikkim Democratic Front of Pawan Kumar Chamling, who was the Chief Minister of the Himalayan state from 1993 to 2019.

The BJP also contested in 31 seats, and the Congress in 12.

According to a statement issued by Chief Electoral Officer D. Anandan, the counting of votes will be held at six designated centres at schools/government offices in Gyalshing, Soreng, Namchi, Gangtok, Pakyong, and Mangan districts.
