ED summons TTV Dinakaran in EC ‘bribe’ money laundering case

The ED has asked AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran for questioning in a money laundering case related to allegedly bribing Election Commission officials to get AIADMK’s ‘two leaves’ election symbol for the VK Sasikala faction, officials said on Wednesday. The agency has taken this step after recently arresting the jailed ‘man’ and another accused in the case, Sukesh Chandrashekhar.

Both Dhinakaran and Chandrashekhar were arrested by the Crime Branch of Delhi Police in 2017. Officials said they have recorded Chandrasekhar’s statement in the case earlier this month and now they want to question Dinakaran to take the probe forward.

The 58-year-old AMMK general secretary has been asked to appear before the agency here on April 8, he said. After giving his statement, his statement will be recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Chandrashekhar was arrested by the Delhi Police in April 2017 for taking money from Dhinakaran for bribing Election Commission officials to get AIADMK’s ‘two leaves’ election symbol for the VK Sasikala faction in the by-election to the RK Nagar assembly seat. Dinakaran was also arrested by the Delhi Police after four days of interrogation for attempting to bribe Election Commission officials for election symbols.

The by-election had to be held due to the death of J Jayalalithaa, the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, who represented the assembly seat.

The Election Commission confiscated the AIADMK’s election symbol after two factions – one led by Dhinakaran’s aunt Sasikala and the other led by former chief minister O Panneerselvam – claimed it.

Dinakaran’s close aide Mallikarjuna was also arrested for allegedly facilitating a Rs 50 crore deal between him and Chandrasekhar. Dinakaran was the treasurer of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and was expelled from the party in August 2017 along with Jayalalithaa’s confidant Sasikala. Later she started her own political party named Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK).
