Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi’s nephew and several others were on Tuesday raided by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with illegal sand mining.

Officials said the ED raided the locations as part of a money laundering probe against companies involved in illegal sand mining in the border state. He said that at least 10-12 places in the state are being covered by the officials of the federal agency and action is being taken under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

ED sources told CNN-News18 that the agency is probing the links of the CM’s nephew Bhupinder Singh Honey with Kudratdeep Singh, who is facing charges of illegal sand mining. Bhupinder Singh Honey had formed a company named Punjab Realtors and it is alleged that the Malikpur mine in Nawashahr was allotted illegally.

The Indian Youth Congress national president said that the BJP has started its election campaign in the state, prompting the Congress to react to the raid.

Voting for 117 assembly seats in the state is to be held on February 20.

Illegal sand mining has been a major issue in Punjab, with former Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh accusing the ruling Congress of having trade links.

Singh walked out of the Congress after a public spat with Navjot Singh Sidhu, alleging that all Congress MLAs were involved in illegal sand trade. “If I start naming names, I have to start from the top,” he had said earlier.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), one of the strongest contenders in the state, has also hit out at Channi over allegations of illegal sand mining in his constituency.
