Dubai: Dubai-based football betting racket busted | Surat News – Times of India

Surat: There are not many people in the city who follow football and even less people would know about the Iran-Iraq FIFA 2022 World Cup qualifiers which are played in distant Tehran. But there are thousands who bet on these games online. and bookies, operating from Dubaihas hired a city ‘watchdog’ to oversee the bets placed on these matches.
The business of the betting racket can be gauged from the salary, which goes up to Rs 40,000 per month, that the Dubai-based operators get hired at various locations.
The police arrested one such person from the city on Friday. The arrested accused has been identified as 26-year-old Hardik Gajjar While the police have registered a case against nine others for running a gambling racket. After arresting Gajjar from his house, a case was registered at Jahangirpura police station. The offense has been registered under the Gambling Prevention Act.
Employees were trained in Dubai and provided with mobile phones to monitor the online betting platform. They used to keep track through mobile applications and multiple IDs.
Among the nine other accused, Amit and Santosh Thakkar He is believed to be the main operator of the racket and is based in Dubai. “Amit and Satisfaction He operates a gambling racket from Dubai. They keep a watch on the entire operation, while many youths like Gajjar are hired at several places to keep an eye on specific sports,” said a police officer.
Gajjar was hired to oversee football and tennis matches. Gajjar should have alerted his employers if he came to know of fraud in betting by any member. Gajjar, who dropped out of college, was paid a salary of Rs 37,500. He used to keep track of betting from two mobile phones through a mobile application. He used to log into the application and website through multiple IDs created by the racket’s operators.
Gajjar informed the police that Amit Gujarat and Alpesh Prajapati are two other employees based in Gujarat and performed similar duties. The accused accepted the bet on cricket and kabaddi as well.
Police have recovered valuables worth Rs 29,900 including two mobile phones, a laptop and cash from the accused. Gajjar’s father works in a textile unit in Pandesara and the family was not aware of his involvement in the racket.
“Police are working to identify those involved in the racket and efforts are on to nab them,” a police officer said.
