Draft NCF 2023: From Two Board Exams to Increase in School Timings, Know Major Changes

Big changes are expected in the education system. ministry of Education released the draft recommendations of the fifth revised edition of the National Curriculum Framework (NCF), developed under the New Education Policy 2020. The changes proposed in the draft NCF can bring about a sea change in the way children learn in India. , from class 1 to class 12.

The draft NCF proposes several significant changes in the four stages of school education, which include the foundational, elementary, middle and secondary stages. The proposed new schooling system in India consists of four stages: foundation stage for children aged 3 to 8, preparatory stage for grades 3 to 5 over three years, middle stage for grades 6 to 8 over three years, and for grade 9 to secondary level 12 to four years.

The draft National Curriculum Framework has also recommended conducting Board exams are held twice a year For class 9 to 12. According to the draft, having board exams twice a year will give students enough time and opportunities to perform well. A test item bank may be created using suitable software to make it possible to offer on-demand exams in future as envisaged in the New Education Policy 2020.

“Students can then appear for the board exams in those courses which they have completed and feel prepared for. This process may be possible through the creation of a comprehensive test item bank, which can be used to create tests using appropriate software,” states the Pre-Draft. The curriculum areas in the Indian education system are classified into eight subjects, namely Humanities (which includes languages), Mathematics and Computing, Vocational Education, Physical Education, Arts, Social Sciences, Science and Inter-disciplinary areas. Eight curricular areas will still be available in classes 11 and 12, and each area will offer different subjects.

The draft NCF proposes greater emphasis on critical thinking and problem-solving skills for students in higher classes. Additionally, it suggests a cultural approach to addressing social issues such as bullying in schools. Under pedagogy considerations, the draft recommends tackling challenges such as bullying, isolation and confusion with boundaries within and outside the classroom.

Further, it is proposed that Class 10 students engage with Environmental Education as a separate subject, based on the competencies developed in Class 9 and their understanding in the areas of major concerns and issues related to Environmental Education. Focus on overall understanding.

The draft also suggested that students should attend school for five-and-a-half days a week and Saturdays should be half-days. It also recommended that the class duration should be 40 minutes for elementary and middle school stages and 50 minutes for students of class 9 and above.

In making these changes, the expert panel recognized that this could put pressure on secondary schools to offer a wider range of subjects. Thus, to ensure that students have a reasonable choice, secondary schools must offer at least one curricular area from each of the following categories: Category 1: Humanities or Social Sciences or Science or Mathematics and Computing ; Category 2: Inter-disciplinary area; Category 3: Art or Play or vocational education.

Students should also have a deep understanding of the development of mathematical thought over human history and the contributions of past and modern mathematicians from India and around the world. It also recommends learning about India’s cultural diversity by recognizing different political ideologies, dialects, languages, traditional practices, religious ideas, trade, commerce, Indian Ayurveda, Yoga etc. In addition, it suggests learning about the Indian Constitution and democracy. Compare it with other forms of government and analyze the important role of the media in shaping public opinion and the functioning of a democratic government.
