Dr. Baljit Kaur became a minister in the Bhagwant Mann government: left the job 3 months before the election, took the broom, used to see patients in the campaign itself

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which registered a historic victory in the Punjab Assembly elections, today expanded its cabinet. Under the leadership of the new Chief Minister of Punjab, Bhagwant Mann, 10 ministers took oath. This new cabinet of the AAP government also includes Maljit’s MLA Baljit Kaur, who is a doctor by profession.

left government job and joined politics
Dr. Baljit Kaur is the daughter of Sadhu Singh, former MP of Faridkot. He is an ophthalmologist. She was a doctor at the Civil Hospital in Muktsar, but had left the government job before joining the party. Even after this, she continued to provide free services in the hospital built in Sri Muktsar Sahib of Sarbat Da Bhala Charitable Trust. Her husband is an executive engineer in Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL).

Free treatment done during election campaign
Usually, when there is a public meeting during the election campaign, the candidates leave by giving speeches. But Dr. Baljit Kaur’s public meeting was different from the rest of the leaders. Whenever she used to go to any public meeting during the campaign, there used to be a line of patients. She didn’t let him down either. Before or after her election campaign, she used to examine the eyes of the patients with the flashlight of the mobile and immediately prescribed the medicine. Those whose eyes were not good, they were advised for operation.

Dr. Baljit Kaur herself is an example of women empowerment. In every speech he gave in his election campaign, he always talked about taking forward women. Apart from women empowerment, she also emphasized on better health system and educational facilities in her speeches.

Dr. Baljit Kaur did her Master of Surgery in Ophthalmology from Baba Farid University of Health Sciences. During the filing of nomination papers for the assembly elections, he had declared his income as 1.5 crore. There is no criminal case registered against him.

Voting for the Punjab Assembly elections took place on February 20. Its result was declared on 10 March. Aam Aadmi Party surprised everyone by winning 92 seats out of 117 seats in Punjab. Baljit Kaur of AAP defeated Harpreet Singh of Shiromani Akali Dal by a margin of 40261 votes from Malout assembly seat. Harpreet Singh has been a two-time MLA from Kotabai Malout.
