A Bangladeshi umpire has decided to quit his profession and walk away from the game after being involved in a controversial incident with Mahmudullah at the Dhaka Premier League T20 tournament earlier this month.

Moniruzzaman was the TV umpire in the match between Ghazi Group Cricketers and Prime Bank in which Mahmudullah’s antics made headlines after a verdict came against him.

The Ghazi Group captain lost his cool when the on-field umpire turned down his appeal for a catch-back against Prime Bank batsman Alok Kapali. He showed dissatisfaction with the umpire’s decision by punching the ground and lying on the adjacent pitch as a sign of protest. As a result, the Bangladesh all-rounder was fined Taka 20,000 by the country’s cricket board.

The incident happened after Shakib Al Hasan’s shameful act, which led to the ban and fine imposed on the former Bangladesh captain.

Shakib was caught on camera kicking the stumps, knocking on the bails and aggressively arguing with the on-field umpire after some decisions during the DPL match between Mohammedan Sporting Club and Abahani Ltd.

His behavior led to a 3-match ban along with Bangladesh Taka’s 5 lakh fine for his level-3 offense during the Mohammedan vs Abahani match in the Dhaka Premier League.

Such incidents have forced Moniruzzaman, who was part of Bangladesh’s ICC Emerging Panel, to quit umpiring from all cricket.

“Enough for me and I don’t want to umpire anymore. I have some self-respect and want to live with it.

“Umpires can make mistakes but if we are treated like this, there is no point in doing it now because I am not in it just for the money.

“I was not involved in Shakib’s game. The way he behaved was very hard for me to digest. In Mahmudullah match I was the TV umpire and was watching the episode closely. It stunned me and at that time, I decided not to go ahead with umpiring,” Moniruzzaman told Cricbuzz.

Moniruzzaman is not employed by the Bangladesh Cricket Board, so the board is yet to provide any explanation behind its decision.

Moniruzzaman said, “I am lucky that nothing has happened to me so far, but who knows I could be the victim of humiliation in the next game and I don’t want to lose my sleep wondering what will happen in the match tomorrow. “
