Dos and don’ts for winter: Easy ways to survive the cold wave in India

Cold wave in India: As the cold wave continued in Delhi, the Aya Nagar weather observatory in south Delhi recorded a low of 1.8 degrees Celsius in the early hours of Friday. The Safdarjung weather station recorded a minimum temperature of 4 degrees on Friday, three notches below the average, providing representative data for the city.

Cold wave conditions are recorded when the minimum temperature is 4 degree Celsius or less.

Dense to very dense fog conditions likely over many parts of Punjab and Haryana and Chandigarh during next 24 hours and thereafter decrease in intensity and distribution, according to IMD. This is due to the current light air and high humidity in the lower troposphere. The air quality in Delhi is still in the “very poor” category.

So let’s follow the do’s and don’ts for cold wave issued by the India Meteorological Department:

1. Make sure you have enough layers of clothing for the winter. Donate old winter clothes to the needy.

2. Have supplies ready for emergencies.

3. Spend as much time as possible indoors to avoid exposure to chilly air during a cold wave outside.

4. Stay dry. If possible, change into dry clothing immediately to prevent loss of body heat.

5. Choose mittens over gloves as they are made of wool, which will keep you warm and protect you from the cold better.

6. Consume warm liquids like herbal tea or coffee or hot water regularly to stay warm.

7. Take care of young and old by taking care of their personal or medical needs.

8. Keep hot water on hand for daily tasks because, in some areas, water in pipes can be chilly or even frozen.

9. Be aware of the symptoms of frostbite which include numbness, white or pale fingers, toes, ear lobes and tip of the nose.

10. Warm water, not hot, should be used to treat any frostbite-affected areas.

in case of hypothermia

1. Place the person in a warm room and ask them to change their clothes.

2. Dry layers of blankets, clothing, towels or sheets and keep the person warm by making skin-to-skin contact.

3. Give warm beverages to help raise body temperature. Do not give alcohol

4. Seek medical help if condition worsens.

what not to do

1. Avoid drinking alcohol. It lowers your body temperature.

2. Avoid massaging the frostbitten area. This can cause more damage.

3. Pay attention to tremors. This is an important first sign that the body is losing heat and a signal to get back inside as soon as possible.
