Rio de Janeiro club Flamengo has appointed Brazil’s Dorival Jr. as their new head coach, who will replace Paulo Sousa as he looks to bounce back from a poor start to the season.

Sousa, who joined Flamengo in December last year, left the club earlier this week after consecutive league defeats against Bragantino and Fortaleza, which left him 14th in Brazil’s top tier after 10 matches.

Dorival, 60, has signed a deal that will run until December 2022, the club said in a statement on Friday. This will be Dorival’s third stint at the club, having previously coached him in 2012 and 2018.

His first job as manager was with Ferroviria in 2002, after which he coached several teams in Brazil.

Dorival takes over one of the biggest and most successful clubs in Brazil, although a regular one is in flux. He will be Flamengo’s fifth coach in two years.

Domenec Torrent, Rosario Seni, Renato Gaucho and Sousa have taken over since the departure of Portuguese boss Jorge Jesus in July 2020, but all left after a short time due to the long shadow of the victorious Jesus and the demands of a larger fan base.
