Do eggs increase the chances of heart diseases?

Eggs are a standard breakfast food, but many people may be wondering whether eggs are healthy for the heart. Each egg contains 78 calories, and they are an efficient, rich source of protein and vitamins. Apart from being a very nutritious breakfast option, people believe that egg yolk which is rich in cholesterol, especially LDL (bad) cholesterol, only increases the risk of heart diseases. However, a December 2021 report in Harvard Health Publishing showed that egg consumption does not actually affect a person’s cholesterol levels.

Most of the cholesterol in our body is made by the liver and does not come from the cholesterol we eat. According to the report, the liver is stimulated to make cholesterol, not dietary cholesterol, primarily by the saturated fat and trans fat in our diet. So the cholesterol level in eggs plays no role when it comes to its effects on heart health. And as far as saturated fat is concerned, one large egg only has about 1.5 grams.

The report noted that the evidence that the cholesterol in one egg a day is safe for most people comes from a number of studies, many of which were conducted at Harvard Medical School itself. “These are studies that do not find higher rates of heart attacks, strokes or other cardiovascular diseases in people who ate one egg per day,” the report said.

Meanwhile, the American Heart Association (AHA) published an advisory about dietary cholesterol in 2020.

In the studies that the AHA examined, egg consumption was not significantly associated with heart disease risk, the advisory said. However, the association recommends people be critical about their intake of dietary cholesterol and saturated fat in their diet.
