DNA Exclusive: Syria, Turkey Earthquake Leaves World Shocked

Videos emerging from Turkey and Syria have people shocked, distressed and worried about the future of mankind. People who thought themselves safe by building high concrete towers were stunned to see what happened in Syria and Turkey after Monday’s earthquake. Amid poor weather conditions, rescue workers in Turkey and Syria are now racing against time to find more people trapped under rubble as the death toll from Tuesday’s devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake passed 5,000.

In today’s DNA, Rohit Ranjan of Zee News analyzes the devastation caused by the earthquake in Turkey and Syria.

The total number of deaths in Turkey has crossed 3,500 while at least 20,534 people have been injured. Around 11,000 buildings were damaged due to the earthquake, while around 25,000 emergency responders are currently working in the affected areas.

Rescuers are using at least 10 ships and 54 aircraft to transport the injured and help with the search operation.

More than 2,660 personnel from 65 countries have been dispatched to help with the search and rescue operation.

Officials said the death toll in Syria had risen to 1,602, while the number of wounded stood at 3,649.

Hundreds of families are still trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings, according to the White Helmets, officially known as the Syria Civil Defence.

International aid is being sent to affected areas from the United Nations, the European Union, NATO and the governments of the US, UK, China, Russia, India, Japan, Iraq, Iran, Australia, New Zealand, Greece and Pakistan.

Meanwhile, disaster management officials in Turkey and Syria said heavy rain and snow were hampering search and rescue efforts.

The earthquake also caused significant damage to three airports across Turkey, posing challenges for aid delivery.
