Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government has successfully completed 8 years of governance and the BJP is all set to hold a grand rally on May 31 in Himachal Pradesh, where assembly elections are due later this year. The rally will be led by the two-time prime minister himself, who will also interact with chief ministers of all the states on completion of eight years of rule. In the past years, the NDA government has taken some bold and unexpected welfare measures that have boosted India’s global image as well as economic growth. PM Narendra Modi first came to power as the country’s leader in 2014 and won his second consecutive term in the 2019 general elections with a comfortable majority.

abrogation of article 370
A part of the BJP’s 2019 manifesto, the government on August 5, 2019 scrapped Article 370 that gave Kashmir a special status. The move was described by many as unimaginable as no one expected any government to actually scrap the act. Since the abrogation of Article 370, many positive changes have been witnessed including record number of tourists and to an extent normalcy has returned in the disputed area.
Ram temple construction
Indians had to wait 500 years for the construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya where the Babri Masjid was built, the birthplace of Lord Rama. It was an issue about which people believed that it was limited to vote bank politics only. However, the construction of the Ram temple was one of the masterstrokes of the Modi government that brought the age-old wish into reality.
triple talaq law
The dangerous trend of Muslim appeasement politics after independence did not allow previous governments to address problematic issues like triple talaq, which was a nightmare for many Muslim women. However, the Modi government in 2019 brought a law against the monotonous practice of triple talaq and today eight crore Muslim women of India have the right to take triple talaq.
uniform civil code
The issue of Uniform Civil Code advocating one law for one nation is also being considered during Modi’s tenure. The Center has said that it is committed to implement the UCC.
GST Implementation
India had been demanding one tax since the year 2000 and the UPA government had set a target of implementing GST in the country by the year 2010, which apparently did not happen. However, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) was finally implemented by the Modi government on July 1, 2017. With the implementation of GST, in the month of April, there was a record GST collection of 1 lakh 68 thousand crores.
DEMONETIZATION
Implemented in 2016, the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 100 notes is considered one of the boldest steps by the Modi government. It was brought to stop the flow of terrorist funding and black money stashed in the country and abroad.
surgical strike and airstrike
The surgical strikes and air strikes, which the government had asked the terrorists to respond to in their own language, were also one of the boldest steps taken by this government. With these military attacks, the world and especially Pakistan came to know that now India can respond even by entering the house.
data digitization
The biggest step towards good governance was to digitize the data of every Indian. With this digitization, people who were not in the mainstream and not connected to the banking system got bank accounts. Under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, 44 crore 23 lakh new bank accounts were opened in the country in the last eight years, in which 1.5 lakh crore rupees have been deposited.
