DK to enroll college students as voters Mangaluru News – Times of India

Mangaluru: Colleges across Dakshina Kannada will start enrollment new voters Those who will turn 18 by January 1, 20223 and are pursuing graduation and other courses.
According to the district administration, this is an initiative that aims to enroll 32,000-35,000 students who will become first time voter,
Giving details, Dr. KV Rajendra, Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada, said that the enrollment will be done through the voter helpline app. “Most of those who have completed 18 years are in first year UG courses. They focus on academics and show no interest in getting enrolled in the voter list. In such a situation, as the election approaches, there is a stir. This results in many errors in the list. To avoid last minute rush, the district administration has started this campaign which will soon be organized in the entire district.
Under the scheme, headmasters will be appointed as nodal officers. If this is not possible, then the senior most faculty member will have to give the responsibility. In addition, each class will be assigned a lecturer and given the task of collecting details of all students who are 18 years old on or before January 1, 2023, but do not have any voter ID. The college will compile the details and mass enrollment will be done in the coming days. Rajendra said the dates for mass nominations are yet to be finalised.
Karnataka, an education hub, is home to thousands of students. The district administration estimates that about 70 percent of the students do not have voter ID.
Kumar, CEO of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat, said that compared to other districts, Dakshina Kannada has less young voters in the age group of 18-19 years. “Our aim is to enroll new voters through the Voter Helpline App and discourage manual system. One day training is planned on 23rd December for the nodal officers leading the campaign. Nodal officers will be given information and training on what documents to collect for enrollment.
