Djokovic tests COVID positive in December, blames agent for faulty visa paperwork

New Delhi: As the new Grand Slam season begins with the start of the Australian Open 2022 on January 17, world number one Novak Djokovic is grabbing headlines, but not for tennis reasons.

In an Instagram post statement on Wednesday, the world No 1 called for an end to “constant misinformation” about his activities in December before coming to Australia.

Embattled in a visa dispute in Australia, the Serbian admitted to having tested COVID positive, but his visa application for Australia was filled with incorrect information, which he termed “human error” from his agent.

On the visa form, Djokovic said he had not traveled in the 14 days prior to the flight to Australia. However, several reports suggest that he was seen in Spain and Serbia during that two-week period.

Djokovic said he did rapid tests that were negative, before he returned positive on a test he carried out very carefully because he was asymptomatic.

In a clarification statement on Wednesday, Djokovic addressed the travel manifesto on his behalf by his support team. His agent sincerely apologizes for the administrative mistake in ticking the wrong box.

“It was a human error and certainly not intentional”, he wrote.

Djokovic won a legal battle on Monday allowing him to remain in the country, but he still faces the prospect of deportation because he has not been vaccinated against COVID-19.
