A day after Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was chosen to contest from the Wayanad seat in Kerala, which her brother Rahul opted to vacate in favour of retaining the Raebareli seat in Uttar Pradesh, her husband, Rober Vadra expressed support for his wife.
Robert Vadra said that he encouraged his wife Priyanka to take on a more active role in the political arena. “This time when the decision was taken, I didn’t take no for an answer,” he said.
He also added that he will “join Priyanka in Parliament when the time is right”.
“It is essential now for her to be in active politics and parliament and not just campaign. She works hard… the slogans she raises ‘I can fight’… If they are taken to the parliament, she’ll be able to perform her duties even better,” Robert Vadra was quoted by TOI as saying.
He also thanked the people in the wake of the Congress party’s performance in the recent elections and expressed his desire to see Priyanka in Parliament.
“She should be in Parliament, not because she has been campaigning but I want her to be in Parliament. She should be in the Parliament before me. I can follow whenever the time is right. I am happy, and I hope people will give her a good mandate,” Robert Vadra added.
The Congress high command had gathered at party chief Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence in New Delhi to decide between Raebareli and Wayanad for Rahul Gandhi, who won both seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha election with margins exceeding 3 lakh votes. Following the meeting, Rahul announced his decision to retain the Raebareli seat.
The former Congress president must vacate one seat within 14 days of the June 4 Lok Sabha results.
Rahul won the Raebareli seat by defeating BJP’s Dinesh Pratap Singh with a margin of 3,90,030 votes. Additionally, he retained the Wayanad seat with a margin of 3,64,422 votes over his nearest rival, Communist Party of India-Marxist candidate Annie Raja.
