Did Sidhu make his goal by resigning? Hunting for replacement as Top Brass looks to cut leader size

Navjot Singh Sidhu resigns Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh may not be so lucky this time.

The maverick Congress leader, who stunned the top leadership with his resignation on Monday, may be in for a serious setback as the angry Gandhi family has started discussions on new names for the Punjab unit chief.

Taking shape of Sidhu, it has been decided that the state leadership, under the guidance of new Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, will resolve the crisis and there will be no central intervention.

Sidhu’s strongly worded resignation has landed him in trouble. If he decides to withdraw his resignation now, it will be seen as an embarrassment and compromise as nothing has changed on the ground.

What makes it worse for Sidhu is that many party leaders are not in favor of pacifying him. Congress leader Ravneet Bittu has questioned the timing of Sidhu disrupting the high level of Congress after the cabinet formation. Without naming Sidhu, Bittu alleged that he had a hidden agenda which could include an RSS angle.

Sidhu resigned on Monday amid reports of rift with Channi over his cabinet. Trouble started on Sunday hours before the new ministers were sworn in, with some MLAs writing to Sidhu saying “tainted” Rana Gurjit Singh should not be made a minister as he faces allegations of corruption in sand mining. In fact, Gurjit Singh was removed from the cabinet by the then Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on allegations of corruption.

Sidhu, however, again failed to prevent Gurjit Singh’s promotion as a minister. She is also believed to be upset over some other ministerial appointments made by Channi, such as Aruna Choudhary, who is a relative of the chief minister and is facing anti-incumbency in her constituency Dinanagar. Sidhu was instead advocating for a berth to Raj Kunar Chhabewal, the head of the Scheduled Castes (SC) department of the Punjab Congress Committee.

Sidhu’s resignation has now fueled speculation about his next course of action. There are many questions unanswered: Will he join you? Party chief Arvind Kejriwal, who will be on a 2-day tour of Punjab from Wednesday, is yet to announce the CM face in the state, which is due for elections in 2022. Is Congress the final loser in these internal party fights? Most importantly, Sidhu’s resignation has now put a big question mark on the continuance of the new Punjab cabinet. Will there be another expansion in the state?

For Sidhu, who is considered close to the Gandhi family, this puzzle has presented the correct catch-22 situation.
