dibrugarh university ragging case: The main accused surrendered before the police on Monday. Police said the accused surrendered at Lekhpani police station in Tinsukia district in the morning.

“The accused will be brought to Dibrugarh police station,” he told PTI. We have already arrested six students in connection with the ragging incident.

Post-graduate student Anand Sharma was allegedly harassed by his seniors on November 26, following which he jumped from the second floor of the hostel to save himself from ragging, police said.

So far, four students of Dibrugarh University have been expelled for three years, while 18 others have been expelled for their alleged involvement in the case. The university authorities also suspended three wardens of ‘Padmnath Gohain Baruah Chatra Niwas’ (PNGBCN hostel) for dereliction of duty.

Sarma, who was admitted to the ICU, had suffered a spinal fracture, which caused severe nerve damage, resulting in weakness in one leg. He also has a fracture in his hand. Doctors said that he underwent surgery on December 1 and is now on the road to recovery.

Registrar Parmanand Sonowal said that the Anti Ragging Committee (ARC) of the university has applied for permission to record the statements of the six arrested people in the CJM court.

“Permission has been sought to visit Dibrugarh University’s law officer Devraj Sharma and inspector of colleges and ARC member Rupam Saikia to go to jail and record their statements,” he said. Additional Deputy Commissioner Sanghamitra Baruah is conducting a magisterial inquiry into the matter.
