‘Dhoni let me down’: Sehwag recalls when Tendulkar stopped him from retiring ahead of WC 2011

Virender Sehwag is one such player in Indian cricket history who has always been known for his flamboyant batting. No matter how the bowlers were, he had only one incident to deal with them all – just smash! Till date, he is regarded as one of the most destructive openers to have represented the country in international cricket. But there came a time in his career when the ‘Nawab of Najafgarh’ thought of quitting cricket. In a conversation with Cricbuzz, Sehwag revealed that he wanted to retire from ODIs during the 2008 tour of Australia as he was dropped for a few games by the then captain MS Dhoni.

He said, ‘In 2008, when we were in Australia, this question (of retirement) came in my mind. I came back in the Test series and scored 150. In ODIs, I couldn’t score that much in three-four attempts. So, M S Dhoni When I was dropped from the playing XI, the thought of quitting ODI cricket came to my mind. I thought I would just continue playing Test cricket,” Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.

The former batsman further said that the batting legend Sachin Tendulkar Stopped him from curtailing his career.

Sachin Tendulkar stopped me at that time. He said, ‘This is a bad phase of your life. Just wait, go back home after this tour, think a lot and then decide what to do next. Fortunately, I had not announced my retirement at that time,” he said.
