Dharam Veer Song Lyrics Caused Controversy

Bollywood movies are full of on-screen drama but not many know that sometimes a dramatic and memorable film involves off-screen mishaps as well. Dharam Veer, a film that released 45 years ago and was considered a box office sensation, involved a blunder by producer Manmohan Desai that created a nationwide uproar and angered women’s organisations. This led to protests and the situation was getting worse over time. The film starred Dharmendra, Zeenat Aman, Jeetendra and Neetu Singh. Dharmendra was also scared because everything was at stake.

Dharam Veer was one of Manmohan Desai’s four blockbuster films. The songs of the film were tremendous hits. But whenever there is a discussion about the film, the controversy related to the songs does not remain untouched. When the film’s music album was released, there was a huge uproar which came as a shock to Manmohan and lyricist Anand Bakshi. Women’s rights organizations were incensed by one of the words used in the song.

The lyrics of the song “Saat Ajube Iss Duniya Mein” created a problem. The second stanza of the song had lyrics that compared the woman to silk and a horse. Women’s rights activists had a problem with comparing a woman to a horse. When the protest started getting bigger, Manmohan decided that the song had to be rewritten and asked Anand to change the lyrics. The changed songs were re-recorded according to the new lyrics and shot with Dharmendra, Zeenat Aman and Jeetendra. Mohammed Rafi sang the song with Mukesh.

It was also said that Dharmendra was struggling financially and health wise at that time. Until the film came along, he struggled to get food and took loans from restaurants, promising to pay back later. However, as soon as the film released, the actor made a lot of money thanks to the huge success of the film and he never looked back.
