The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday filed a charge sheet against auto driver Lakhan Verma and his accomplice Rahul Verma in connection with the murder of Dhanbad judge Uttam Anand on July 28. The agency said that further investigation in the case is on and the chargesheet has been filed within 90 days so that it does not happen that both the accused get bail.

The 49-year-old district judge was hit by a heavy autorickshaw while jogging near Randhir Verma Chowk in Dhanbad on July 28. The auto rickshaw driver immediately fled the spot. On October 11, a CBI team from Delhi produced auto driver Lakhan Verma and his accomplice Rahul Verma in the court of CBI Judicial Magistrate and Special Magistrate Abhishek Srivastava.

After hearing the agency’s argument, the court sent Lakhan and Rahul to Dhanbad jail in judicial custody. On October 4, the CBI had taken both the accused on remand for the third time. The CBI had sought their custody for 11 days, but the court sent them on remand for 7 days only.

The accused were constantly changing statements

The Special Police Officer assisting the CBI in this case said that both the accused kept changing their statements like professional criminals. The Jharkhand High Court had observed that the investigation report submitted by the CBI was vague and ordered the agency to be more specific in its investigation in the matter.
