Indian women’s hockey team midfielder Salima Tete, who played a key role in India’s scintillating performance at the Tokyo Olympics, said on Tuesday that even though the team could not finish on the podium, it has given signs of a bright future.

India gave a tough fight to some of the world’s top teams in the Olympics and created history when they defeated three-time Olympic champions Australia 1-0 in the quarter-finals and played their first Olympic semi-final against Argentina.

“Our performance in Tokyo is slowly sinking now. We were really disappointed when we lost to Great Britain in the bronze medal match, but now we are seeing positives from the tournament. We may not have won a medal, but the way we played in Tokyo has definitely given us a lot of confidence and it will definitely help us grow as a team and deliver better results in the future.” .

Tete said that she feels blessed to have the opportunity to play in the Olympic Games at a very young age.

“The Olympic Games is the biggest tournament for any sportsperson and I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to perform on the biggest stages for my country. I have learned a lot by playing in high pressure situations and I am definitely going to use my learnings in the upcoming competitions. There is a lot to learn when one is up against the best and we are very happy with the way we put up a tough fight against each of our opponents in the knock-out stage of the Tokyo Games.”

When asked about the most important things that helped India do well in the Olympics, Tete said, “We always found a way to push the ball and attack our opponents in the Olympics. We created a lot of scoring opportunities and made sure to use our penalty corners well. And at the same time, we gave our all on the pitch and never gave up, no matter what the situation. The never-give-up attitude helped us stay in the moment and fight against our opponents till the last whistle.”
