Vikram Misri, a 1989 batch Indian Foreign Service officer, will be inducted as India’s new Foreign Secretary with effect from July 15.
Deputy National Security Advisor (NSA) Vikram Misri is set to be appointed as the next Foreign Secretary on June 28. Misri, a 1989 batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, will be inducted as India’s new Foreign Secretary with effect from July 15. He will replace the incumbent Vinay Kwatra.
Misri’s appointment comes amid various foreign policy challenges. These challenges include its bitter relationship with China given the eastern Ladakh border row. It needs to be noted that Misri served as India’s ambassador to China from 2019-2021 before he was appointed the deputy NSA.
Born in Srinagar in 1964, Misri completed his early education in Gwalior and went on to pursue an undergraduate degree in history from Hindu College, Delhi University. Later, he did his MBA from XLRI.
As for his diplomatic career with the Indian Foreign Service, it began in 1989 when served at Indian missions in Brussels and Tunis. In his career spanning nearly 35 years, Misri has held several positions including India’s ambassador to Spain (2014-2016) and Myanmar (2016-2018) besides being a part of many Indian missions including Pakistan, the US, Germany, Belgium, and Sri Lanka.
Over the years, Misri also gained respect for his role as a China expert. The last he served as an ambassador was in Beijing from January 2019 to December 2021. FYI, the Galwan Valley clashes took place during this period.
Misri’s background in diplomacy is truly impressive. The officer also holds the rare distinction. He served as private secretary to three Prime Ministers. These Prime Ministers are Inder Kumar Gujral, Manmohan Singh, and Narendra Modi.
As far as his most recent ambassadorial role is concerned, he was in Beijing, serving as one of the Ministry of External Affairs’ foremost experts on China. He was appointed to the National Security Council Secretariat in January 2022
The 59-year-old diplomat, during this period, has played a key role during the India and China clashes. For those unknown, the tension between the two countries flared following the 2020 standoff in eastern Ladakh and the subsequent Galwan Valley clash.
