Deoghar ropeway accident: rescue operation ends after 46 hours, three killed

New Delhi: The rescue operation to rescue tourists trapped in cable cars in Deoghar district of Jharkhand has ended after 46 hours. 47 people stranded on the ropeway at Trikoot Hills have been rescued.

Media reports said two tourists were killed by helicopters during unsuccessful rescue efforts on Monday and Tuesday. A total of three people, including two women, died in the accident.

1. During the rescue operation, one of the two women fell from the helicopter and was declared brought dead at the hospital.

Deoghar Civil Surgeon CK Shahi said that the woman has been identified as 60-year-old Shobha Devi.

2. For about 40 hours, 15 tourists were stuck in the air on the ropeway at Trikoot Hills. Of these, 14 were rescued by helicopters of the Indian Air Force, ending the operation.

“Of the remaining 15 people trapped in the cable cars, 14 have been rescued, while a woman fell from the helicopter during the rescue operation,” Additional Director General of Police RK Malik said in a report by news agency PTI.

3. Malik said that the evacuated people have been sent to the hospital, and they will be examined there.

4. Indian Air Force launches rescue operation for stranded passengers on TrikuTea Hills Ropeway in Deoghar on 11th and 12th April. During the activity, IAF Mi-17V5 and ALH Mk III helicopters made 28 flights lasting 26 hours, the IAF said in an update on Twitter on Tuesday.

The Air Force said that 35 passengers were evacuated in 10 cable cars in this extremely challenging operation.

5. On April 10, 2022, more than 60 people were trapped on the ropeway after a collision between cable cars due to a technical fault. He was evacuated with the help of two Air Force helicopters.

6. Meanwhile, 12 injured are undergoing treatment in hospitals.

7. The rescue operation was jointly carried out by the Indian Air Force, Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police, National Disaster Response Force and district administration.

8. Drones were being used to supply food and water to the stranded people.

9. Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has announced a high level inquiry into the incident. “The state government is keeping a close watch on the situation,” Soren said.

10. Jharkhand Governor Ramesh Bais has expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased. He has also prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.

According to the Jharkhand Tourism Department, Trikoot Ropeway is the highest vertical ropeway in India, and is approximately 766 meters long.
