Delhi’s slander and a cursory advice for Navjot Sidhu: Congress high command shuns him

Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu, who is at loggerheads with Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh amid an intense power struggle in the state, was thrown out of the door in Delhi, fueling reports of the party high command being angry with him.

Sidhu had left for Delhi late on Wednesday, a day after meeting AICC general secretary Harish Rawat where he expressed his “displeasure” over the unfulfilled promises by the Amarinder government. Rawat reached Chandigarh on Tuesday amid the ongoing tussle between the two camps.

Party sources said the PPCC chief was hoping to meet senior party leaders, including interim president Sonia Gandhi, but failed to do so. Sources said Sidhu was planning to inform the party high command about the current status of ‘party affairs’ – a euphemism for factionalism in the party.

Instead of an appointment, Sidhu was given cursory advice. Sources said the party leadership informed Sidhu that the party in-charge in Chandigarh, along with Harish Rawat, had been advised to place his ‘complaint’ before him.

Interestingly, Sidhu had met Rawat when he had reached Chandigarh sometime on Tuesday. He had also decided to go to Delhi when Rawat was meeting Amarinder and the MLAs of his camp in Chandigarh.

The Sidhu camp had suffered a setback earlier as well, when there were demands for the removal of the Chief Minister by some MLAs, which did not materialise. Some MLAs also met Rawat in Dehradun. But Rawat later told the media that there were no plans to remove Captain Amarinder.

Despite claims of a ceasefire, Sidhu and Captain Punjab are at loggerheads even after taking over the reins of Congress. Sidhu has been scathingly critical of the Captain Amarinder government for its alleged failure to implement some old election promises.
