In a relief to commuters travelling from Delhi to Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) will throw open an 845-km section of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway to the public by October.
The stretch is part of the construction of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, which will be the country’s longest expressway at a total of 1,386 kilometres. It is being constructed in a total of nine phases.
According to the NHAI, 80% of the work on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway has been completed. The stretch from Delhi to Vadodara (845 km) is almost complete and the remaining will be completed by next month.
Initially, the date for completion of the project was August. However, it could not be completed due to technical delays. The date for completion has been revised to October. This expressway is expected to be ready by Diwali.
Previously, the 293-km-long stretch from Delhi to Dausa Sawai Madhopur was opened for traffic, as was the 245-km-long Jhalawar-Ratlam-Madhya Pradesh-Gujarat stretch. The 159-km-long stretch from Sawai Madhopur to Jhalawar and the 148-km-long stretch from the Madhya Pradesh-Gujarat border to Vadodara will be ready by next month.
The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway will stretch from Sohna in Haryana to Maharashtra via Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. This will improve connectivity to Jaipur, Ajmer, Kishangarh, Kota, Udaipur, Chittorgarh, Sawai Madhopur, Bhopal, Ujjain, Indore, Surat, and the nearby cities.
Presently, the distance from Delhi to Vadodara by road is about 1,300 km. After the expressway is completed, this distance will come down to 900 km. By train, it takes more than 14 hours to cover the distance of 1,100 km. When the expressway is thrown open to the public, the estimated travel by road would drop to nine hours.
