Delhi University students on hunger strike demanding online examination

Delhi University (DU) students will be on hunger strike today to demand online examination. Many students have claimed that they will boycott classes today. The strike is likely to start from noon.

Later Delhi University announced that it will conduct the even semester examinations in pen-and-paper mode. On April 4, students gathered in front of the Faculty of Arts to protest against the offline examination. Many students gathered at the DU campus demanding Online Open Book Exams (OBE) for the second, fourth and sixth semesters.

First, third and fifth semester students will appear for the exam in online OBE mode, but second, fourth and sixth semester students will have to appear for the exam in physical mode tentatively in May and June. According to students, since most of their courses have been conducted online amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the exams should also be conducted online and in OBE format. Offline classes in DU started in February itself.

Students have taken to social media platforms to demand OBE with hashtags. #HybridModeShouldBeAChoice #OBEForAllSemestersInDU #OnlineExamForAllSemestersOfDU. “The students will not hold back! Join the protest at the Faculty of Arts! April 5, 11 a.m. Ensure OBE for 4th and 6th semesters!” One student tweeted.

Another wrote, “The sudden reopening of the university in the middle of the current semester and the decision to take the exams in offline mode has put enormous mental stress on the students.”

On 1st April, DU had issued a notification that the students who will appear in the examination Additional 30 minutes will be given to the physical mode. They will also get more options in the question paper as a special one-time measure. Syllabus has also been reduced. In addition, those who will be unable to write the exam due to “reasonable reasons” will be given an opportunity to appear in the second phase of the exam to be held in the next two months, as reported in leading daily news.
