A scuffle broke out between two groups at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Sunday over allegedly consuming non-vegetarian food. The clash took place near Kaveri Hostel.

While the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) alleged that Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members prevented students from eating non-vegetarian food in the hostel and “created a violent atmosphere”, the ABVP denied the allegation and claimed that ” ‘Leftists’ obstructed the worship program organized in the hostel on the occasion of Ramnavami festival.

Both sides accused each other of pelting stones and injuring their members. Manoj C, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) told PTI that some students suffered injuries.

He said, “So far there has been no violence. There was a protest which is over. We are all posted here with our team. On the request of the university, we have come here. We are trying to maintain peace,” he said. are.”

Sarika, a former JNUSU vice-president and PhD student, said, “ABVP created ruckus in JNU as other students protested their attempt to ban non-vegetarian food. 50-60 people have been injured.”

The JNUSU alleged that the ABVP, which is the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), used “muscle power and hooliganism” to create a ruckus, assaulting the employees and asking them not to prepare any non-vegetarian items. asked for

“JNU and its hostels are meant to be inclusive places for all and not for a particular section,” it said.

The ABVP, however, rubbished JNUSU’s allegations and claimed that “leftists” disrupted a puja and havan organized by students on the occasion of Ram Navami.

On the auspicious occasion of Ram Navami, at 3.30 pm, some common students had organized a puja and havan program in Kauvery hostel.

“Common students of JNU attended the puja in large numbers. Leftists came to protest, obstructed the puja and prevented the puja from being held. They created false ruckus on the issue of ‘right to food’ (non-vegetarian food),” he said. .
