Under the drive launched by the Delhi government’s transport department and traffic police in compliance with the Supreme Court’s directions, the first violation of lane discipline will attract a fine of Rs 10,000.

The second offense would invite prosecution under the Motor Vehicles (MV) Act, the third offense would lead to the suspension of the driving license and the fourth offense would lead to the expiry of the vehicle permit.
Enforcement teams challaned four drivers of Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and three cluster scheme buses. A senior transport department official said a fine of Rs 10,000 would be imposed on the drivers.
Transport Minister Kailash Gehlot inspected the operation at ITO intersection and interacted with the enforcement staff on the ground. A total of 138 teams are on the floor to ensure enforcement on 474 km of roads targeted across 46 corridors, Gehlot said, urging people not to encroach on the designated lanes to allow smooth plying of buses.
In consultation with Delhi Traffic Police and other stakeholders, the Transport Department has identified 46 major corridors for implementation of the campaign. The initiative will be implemented in three phases, with a total coverage of 474.91 km in the final phase.
A statement from the Transport Department said Phase 1 will focus on ensuring visibility and impact, while Phase 2 will expand the initiative to the Outer Ring Road and other nearby areas. With buses plying in their designated lanes and stopping at the bus queue boxes at the stands, long queues were witnessed during peak hours.
The statement said that during the no-entry time of goods vehicles, even a light motor vehicle can ply in the designated bus lane. However, after the no-entry period ends, officials said the bus lanes will be used exclusively by buses and heavy vehicles.
A notice from the transport department said, “Public is advised not to drive their vehicles in designated bus lanes. Vehicles parked in bus lanes or bus boxes can be towed and penal action will be taken as per law.” will be invited.”
Transport Commissioner Ashish Kundra tweeted, “Bus moving in disciplined lanes! A welcome change. Let us all make public transport easier together.”
The Public Works Department has been directed to remove signage, warning signs, marking of bus lanes, painting of bus boxes (thermoplastic) and encroachments, if any, on selected corridors.
A nodal officer of the enforcement wing will be posted at the department headquarters to oversee the operation. All enforcement teams will click the photo and send the geo location to the WhatsApp number and the challan will be issued centrally at the end of the day.
A central enforcement team will also be deployed at the Kashmere Gate Command and Control Centre. The department has also provided cranes to enforcement teams to nab and remove vehicles obstructing bus lanes.
A video recording/photograph with the geographical location of the vehicle found parked in the bus lane or heavy and goods vehicles plying outside the bus lane shall be made to be preserved as evidence of such violation.
