Delhi-NCR wakes up to rain, thunderstorm; air quality improves to ‘moderate’

New Delhi: After several days of scorching heat and prevailing heat wave conditions, rain on Thursday morning brought respite to some areas of Delhi-NCR. Heavy rain and thunderstorm lashed many parts of Delhi-NCR today. The people of Delhi are facing dust storm for the last two days. In the national capital too, the sky was cloudy and strong winds were blowing.

The maximum temperature in Delhi on Wednesday was recorded at 41.1 degree Celsius while the minimum temperature was recorded at 25.4 degree Celsius. The maximum and minimum temperatures on Thursday are likely to be around 40 and 26 degrees Celsius, respectively.

IMD Bulletin

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its bulletin that most parts of Delhi-NCR may experience thunderstorms on Thursday.

The IMD has issued an advisory covering the likely impact of rain and suggested actions for people to avoid any rain-related incident.

The agency said the rains may cause traffic jams and slippery roads, likely to affect routine outdoor business or activity, partial damage to vulnerable structures and minor damage to kutcha houses/walls and huts. It also advised the public not to lie on concrete floors and lean against concrete walls, unplug electrical/electronic equipment and get out of water bodies immediately.

AQI improved to ‘moderate’

The air quality in the national capital improved to ‘moderate’ category on Thursday morning. According to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), the overall air quality index (AQI) in Delhi stood at 143 this morning.

The national capital woke up to a cloudy Wednesday morning with the air quality index (AQI) hovering near the ‘severe’ level, while the minimum temperature settled at 25.4 degrees Celsius, a notch below the season’s average. After a gap of nearly three months, it moved to the ‘very poor’ category on Wednesday due to high dust content in the air.

The air quality index (AQI) at 8 am on Wednesday touched a high of 397 in the ‘very poor’ category, but improved marginally to 336 at 4 pm.

Data from the Central Pollution Control Board shows that the last time Delhi saw a ‘very poor’ air day was on February 22 with an AQI of 302. The national capital’s AQI on Monday was 162 in the ‘moderate’ category and 254 in the ‘poor’ category. Tuesday

According to the Air Quality Early Warning System for Delhi, the forecasting body under the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences, the air quality remained in the ‘very poor’ category on Wednesday due to high dust concentration. The air quality is likely to remain in the ‘poor’ category from Thursday to Saturday.
