Delhi minister Satyendar Jain arrested: All you need to know about the case against AAP leader

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday arrested Delhi government minister Satyendar Jain in a case related to hawala transactions involving Kolkata-based companies, here’s what you need to know about Jain and the case.

Jain is the Minister of Health, Home, Power and PWD in the Aam Aadmi Party-led Delhi government.

The ED money laundering case against the AAP minister stems from the August 2017 First Information Report (FIR) by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) against him and others for alleged possession of disproportionate assets.

Sources told CNN-News18 that the ED made the arrests after receiving housing entries from companies based in Kolkata.

Sources further said that the entries were taken at the time when Jain held a public office.

Assets worth Rs 4.81 crore attached

The ED said in April that it has “gainly owned and controlled” assets worth Rs 4.81 crore of Jain’s family and companies in connection with the money laundering probe.

The immovable assets worth Rs 4.81 crore are owned by Akinchan Developers Pvt Ltd. Ltd., Indo Metal Impex Pvt. Ltd., Paryas Infosolutions Pvt. Ltd., Mangalayatan Projects Pvt. Ltd., JJ Ideal Estate Pvt. Ltd., Swati Jain, wife of Vaibhav Jain, Sushila Jain, wife of Ajit Prasad Jain and Indu Jain, wife of Sunil Jain.

The investigation found that “during the period 2015-16, when Satyendra Kumar Jain was a public servant, companies owned and controlled by him received housing entries worth Rs 4.81 crore from shell companies in lieu of cash transferred to the Kolkata-based entry. operators through the hawala route”.

The ED had noted, “These amounts were used for outright purchase of land or for repayment of loans taken for purchase of agricultural land in and around Delhi.”

Reacting to Jain’s arrest, AAP MLA Somnath Bharti criticized the BJP for “misusing” the agency. Kejriwal had said in February that he had come to know from sources that the ED was going to arrest Jain just before the Punjab Assembly elections and accused the Center of targeting the Centre. After the Bharatiya Janata Party realized that AAP would “lose” the election.

AAP won the Punjab assembly elections in March and formed its government in the border state with Bhagwant Mann as chief minister.
