Delhi High Court directs police to protect woman who allegedly tortured her for converting to Islam

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Thursday directed the police to ensure the safety of a woman who alleged that she was threatened and harassed for converting to Islam.

The vacation bench of the High Court had directed to list the matter before the roster bench on July 5.

Justice C. Hari Shankar directed the Delhi Police to take adequate steps to protect the life and safety of the 29-year-old woman until the matter is taken up by a regular bench.

“This is a matter which should be appropriately taken up as per the roster by the regular Bench, having regard to the nature of the average in the petition. It is clarified that this Vacation Bench may, in one way or another, regard the correctness of the said statements. Not expressing any opinion,” said the vacation bench of the High Court.

Advocate Sameer Vashisht, appearing for Delhi Police in the matter, earlier told the court that attempts were made to contact the woman at the address mentioned in the petition but she could not be traced.

Meanwhile, the woman’s lawyer Tanya Aggarwal informed the court that in view of the apprehensions she had to change her address frequently and would provide the present location to the lawyer representing the police.

The woman has approached the court seeking protection of her privacy as well as the safety of herself and her family members.

The woman’s lawyer Kamlesh Kumar Mishra in her plea said, “Due to her conversion, she and her family are being targeted and malicious material about her is being published in the media every day, which needs to be stopped immediately.” is.” That she lives in Delhi but is originally from Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh.

The petition said that the woman converted to Islam “of my own free will and without any threat or coercion” on May 27.

However, his petition states that he has been receiving calls from “different media persons” since June 23 threatening to publish news about his conversion.
