Delhi government to consider reopening schools, colleges on November 24

The Delhi government will consider reopening work from home for schools, colleges and other educational institutions as well as government employees during a review meeting on Wednesday, November 24.

“For some time, the air quality index remained above the 600-mark. However, the steps taken to curb air pollution and change in wind patterns have resulted in a gradual decline in the level of air pollution,” Environment Minister Gopal Rai told news agency PTI. The Air Quality Index (AQI) of Delhi stood at 307 at 1 pm on Sunday, up from 349 at 4 pm on Sunday.

Schools in Delhi have been closed since November 15 due to the ‘severe’ level of air pollution. The Directorate of Education had earlier announced that schools, colleges and government offices would remain closed till further orders. Meanwhile, online education will continue as it was during the lockdown imposed by the pandemic.

Schools reopened in Delhi for classes 9 to 12 on September 1 and on November 1 for the rest of the classes. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, however, had to shut schools once again due to rising air pollution and allowed only virtual classes. Earlier there were reports that the government is also considering a complete lockdown if the situation worsens.

Not only Delhi Schools in Gurugram, Faridabad, Sonipat and Jhajjar were also closed last time Weeks due to drop in air pollution levels. The Haryana government had in July reopened physical classes for students of classes 6 to 12, on September 1 for classes 4 and 5 and from September 20 for students of classes 1 to 3.

Meanwhile, most other states including West Bengal, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Odisha have reopened schools. Gujarat resumes physical classes for students from 1st to 5th from today However, for those who do not wish to attend the physical classes, the online classes will continue at the same time.
