Delhi: Five prisoners of Tihar died in 8 days, orders for investigation

Director General (Prisons) Sandeep Goel told IANS that these prisoners died in different jails and “no one was related to any kind of violence”.

Five inmates have died in the national capital’s Tihar Jail in the last eight days, a Delhi Police official said here on Saturday.

Despite all the deaths being of natural causes, the official said that “a magisterial inquiry has been initiated under section 176 of CrPC” into all the deaths.

On Friday also the death of a prisoner was reported in Tihar Jail No.

The official said the prisoner was found unconscious in his cell and was immediately rushed to the hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.

He also reportedly died due to health problems.

The deceased prisoner has been identified as Vikram alias Vicky.

Director General (Prisons) Sandeep Goel told IANS that these prisoners died in different jails and “no one was related to any kind of violence”.

“In all these, the circumstances indicate natural causes such as chronic disease or other unknown cause,” Goyal said, adding that as per the rules, investigation is being conducted by the Metropolitan Magistrate in each case.
