The News18 Mega Exit Poll has predicted 5-7 seats for the BJP in Delhi. The Congress could end up with 0-2 seats while its INDIA bloc partner might not be able to open its account in the national capital where it’s in power at the state-level

The BJP could retain its hold over the Lok Sabha seats in Delhi, with the News18 Mega Exit Poll predicting 5-7 seats for the saffron party in the national capital. The Congress could end up with 0-2 seats while its INDIA bloc partner might not be able to open its account in the national capital where it’s in power at the state-level.

The direct contest between the BJP and AAP-Congress alliance for the seven Lok Sabha constituencies in Delhi had witnessed a turnout of over 54% on May 25 in the midst of the scorching summer heat.

The highest polling percentage of 58.30% was recorded in North East Delhi where sitting BJP MP Manoj Tiwari is pitted against Kanhaiya Kumar of Congress. The lowest turnout of 51.54% was recorded in the New Delhi seat from where BJP’s Bansuri Swaraj was contesting against INDIA bloc constituent AAP’s Somnath Bharti.

Chandni Chowk seat recorded 53.27% polling, East Delhi 54.37%, West Delhi 54.90%, North West Delhi 53.81% and South Delhi 52.83%.

INDIA bloc partners AAP and the Congress contested in alliance for the first time in Delhi under a four-three seat-share formula. The AAP contested in New Delhi, South Delhi, West Delhi and East Delhi, while the Congress candidates fought the polls from Chandni Chowk, North East Delhi, and North West constituencies.

After the end of the polling, the Aam Aadmi Party had claimed that the INDIA bloc would sweep all seven seats in Delhi despite “all tricks” adopted by the BJP’s Lieutenant Governor by “misusing police” to favour the BJP on election day.

“The last blow was arresting the sitting chief minister who has significantly transformed their lives by improving education, health, electricity, water, least inflation and providing free bus rides for women. This arrest has enraged Delhiites and the people of Delhi have spoken in favour of guarantees and against the Brashtachari Jumla Party,” the party said in a statement.

Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva said that voters have expressed confidence in Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his development works and the party is going to again win all seven seats.

Delhi had recorded 60.52% voting in the 2019 general elections when the BJP had swept all the seats, routing both AAP and Congress.

EXIT POLL METHODOLOGY

The News18 Poll Hub survey covered all 518 seats in 21 major states, which account for 95% of Lok Sabha constituencies in the country. In each Lok Sabha constituency, 180 interviews were conducted using a structured questionnaire, which was translated into 11 regional languages. For phases one to six, the interviews were conducted the ‘day after’, as it is known to yield more reliable responses, and the traditional exit poll – asking people coming out of the polling booth – was carried out for Phase 7.

A total sample size of 93,240 across 21 states was planned, but over 95,000 was achieved. In each Lok Sabha constituency, three Vidhan Sabha constituencies were covered, with 10 polling booths in each selected through random sampling. Around each polling station, trained investigators conducted 15 door-to-door interviews – one eligible respondent with inked finger per household. In case of the exit poll, near each polling station, 15 interviews were conducted of people coming out after casting their votes, with every fifth person stopped for interview.

On-spot checks by senior field manager and executives, geo-tagging of interviews and telephonic back-checks for 20% of the sample in each state were among the many steps taken to maintain quality.
