New Delhi: After the water level in the Yamuna crossed the all-time high, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday requested Home Minister Amit Shah to ensure release of limited amount of water from Hathnikund barrage in Haryana.
In a letter to the home minister, the Delhi chief minister said the water level of the Yamuna river has reached the mark of 207.55 metres, breaking its all-time record of 207.49 meters set in 1978, and the city could be inundated any time.

Due to the rains in Delhi, the water level of Yamuna is not increasing. But due to release of abundant water from Hathinikund Barrage of Haryana, it is continuously increasing. I request you to ensure release of water in limited quantity to control further rise in water level,” Kejriwal said.
Kejriwal said Delhi would host G-20 meetings in the coming days and floods in the national capital would tarnish the country’s image internationally.
Record of 45 years broken in Delhi
The Yamuna crossed the danger mark of 205.33 meters in Delhi, inundating several low-lying areas along the river. The water level is dangerously close to touching the highest level of 207.49 metres, which was recorded in 1978. Both road and rail traffic on the old Yamuna bridge has been closed as Haryana has released excess water from Hathinikund barrage in Yamunanagar into the Yamuna.
